Dan Chouinard’s Mambo Italiano

Accordionist Dan Chouinard is hosting “Mambo Italiano”, an exploration of the Italian roots of American popular music, tomorrow (Saturday) night at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, MN. Inspired by the summer Chouinard spent biking across Europe with his accordion, the show features Italian music ranging from peasant songs and opera to postwar hits from the likes of Louis Prima, Antonio Bennett and Concetta Francis. Even if you can’t make it to the show, there’s an excellent preview and interview with some of the performers on the Minnesota Public Radio website. You can also read a review of “Cafe Europa”, a similar (but more autobiographical) show that Chouinard put on last year.

  1. I caught some of “Mambo Italiano” on the local tv station tonight..i don’t know what the station is..i think it’s SPINN….but anyways, i love it. I live in Saint Paul, i work at Cossetta’s resteraunt downtown, and i just love italian music and culture.
I really wanted to know if they sell a taping of the performance..or anything..i wanted to know where i could download “jealousy,” or know who it’s originally done by. I would like to see “Mambo Italiano” in full…so yea..i love it..and would like to know more. Thanks

  2. Unfortunately, I don’t have any more info about “Mambo Italiano”. I would check with Dan, but I couldn’t find any contact information on his website.

As for “Jealousy”, I didn’t see Dan’s show so I can’t know for sure, but there’s a fairly well-known tango called “Jealousy” (or “Celos”) that’s been recorded by many artists over the years. Here’s some background on the tune. I did a search on the iTunes store and found several versions, including ones by Xavier Cugat and Brave Combo. I’d look around there and see if you find one you like.

    Hope that helps you, Claire!

  3. Mambo Italiano was sung by Rosemary Clooney; that’s likely who you saw perform it on (public? ) television. She did a great job of the song; a real catchy tune!
