Mexican singer/songwriter Julieta Venegas rose to fame with her unique brand of accordion rock, fueled by an expansive sound and powerful lyrics typically heard only in veteran artists. Lately, she’s been reinventing herself with a brighter pop sound that has widened her audience even more. She just received four Latin Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year for Limon y Sal and Record of the Year for “Me Voy”. This clever video for “Me Voy” also earned a Grammy nod:

Good question! I’ve been wondering about the lyrics, too. I found the Spanish lyrics here and I get the basic idea (he doesn’t appreciate her, so she’s leaving him), but I’m still looking for a good English translation.

The video for this song is really nifty!
I translated it with Babelfish and it looks like your interpretation is correct. She’s leaving him because he doesn’t appreciate her or listen. She is a little sad about it, but has come to terms with it and looks forward to a future with someone new who will fulfill her needs.

Why did you not understand my heart?
It happened because you did not have the bravery to see who I am.
Because you didn’t listen to what was around you.
Only the noise outside
And I am nothing to you.
I’m not going to cry and say that I didn’t deserve this
Because I probably deserve it, but I don’t want it.
I go away.
What a pity, but goodbye.
I leave you.
Because I wait for something better.
Someone that knows to give me the love
That sweetens salt, and makes the sun set.
I thought that I would never leave you
The best thing of life is love.
But today I understand that there is not enough for us.
I’m not going to cry and say that I didn’t deserve this
Because I probably deserve it, but I don’t want it.
I go away.
What a pity, but goodbye.
I leave you.
