Everyone’s a Winner!

Thanks to everyone who entered Let’s Polka’s 1st Birthday Contest last week; your recommendations will be keeping us busy for a while! And congratulations to our prize winners: Karla, Jesse, and Bruce. I’ll be following up and sending out Let’s Polka stickers to everyone who commented later this week.

Thanks again for helping celebrate Let’s Polka’s first year!

This Week in Accordion: KEDA Conjunto Fest

What’s on the accordion calendar this week?

A note to our friends north of the border: our calendar (finally) supports Canadian events! So whether it’s a polka dance in Medicine Hat or a musette revival in Montreal, let us know what’s going on in your area.

And don’t forget, Monday is the last day to enter our birthday contest. Post a comment to receive free Let’s Polka stickers and maybe even an accordion book or polka DVD. Everyone’s a winner!

Let’s Polka’s 1st Birthday Contest

Let's Polka stickerCan you believe it’s been a whole year since Let’s Polka first came kicking and squeezing into this world? It seems like just yesterday we were interviewing polka greats, hanging out at Camp AccordionLand and the Cotati Accordion Festival, and being written up in the San Francisco Chronicle. We’ve seen squeezebox zombies, zydeco prodigies, accordion-toting Finnish metal bands, and bizarre Slovenian polka videos. We even managed to anger some Garfield fans along the way.

To celebrate the occasion, we’re engaging in our favorite hobby: giving away free stuff! But first, you have to give us something in return.

Your mission: Write a comment on this post and tell us about an accordion artist (solo or group) that we should hear. It could be a musette accordion player from the 1930s, your cousin’s conjunto band, or a punk/polka combo you found on MySpace. If there’s an accordion involved, we want to know about it!

We’ll send a handful of Let’s Polka stickers (see photo above) to everyone who posts a comment. Three lucky, randomly-chosen commenters will also receive one of these items from our holiday gift guide:

We’ll hold the drawing for those three prizes next Monday, so you have one week to post your comment. (If you comment after Monday, you can still get stickers but you won’t win one of the three prizes.)

Sound good? Then start posting — and winning — today!

This Week in Accordion: NAA Convention

What’s squeezin’ this week?

  • National Accordion Convention (Wednesday-Sunday in Richardson, TX)
The National Accordion Association’s annual convention promises a diverse lineup of concerts, workshops, jam sessions, and more. It’s possibly the only place you can attend a Fred Ziwich Cleveland-style polka workshop followed by a Joél Guzman Tex-Mex button accordion workshop. (Update: There’s an article and video about the festival over at the Dallas Morning News.)
  • Klezmer en Buenos Aires (Wednesday in Stanford, CA)
The acclaimed duo of César Lerner (accordion) and Marcelo Moguilevsky (clarinet/sax) make their first Bay Area appearance at Stanford on Wednesday, followed by a show in Berkeley on Saturday. Their unique sound combines Argentinian folk music with jazz, tango, and klezmer. (For more info, read the writeup in Sunday’s San Jose Mercury News.)
  • Musical Fortunes (Thursday in Berkeley, CA)
Berkeley’s Jewish Music Festival kicks off with an original work composed by one of our local favorites, composer/accordionist Dan Cantrell. His “Musical Fortunes” explores themes based on traditional Jewish and Romani (Gypsy) music and features the Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble, Michael Alpert, and Rumen Shopov.

Check our calendar for more, including Daran Kravanh in Los Angeles and a tasty zydeco lineup at the Cajun-Zydeco Crawfish Festival in St. Petersburg, Florida.

If there’s an accordion event in your area that we’ve missed let us know!

This Week in Accordion: Smythe’s Anniversary

  • Smythe’s 9th Anniversary Accordion Party (Saturday in Oakland, CA)
Smythe’s Accordion Center, one of the Bay Area’s finest accordion shops, celebrates its 9th anniversary in style. Performers include The Lemon Lime Lights, Vermillion Lies, and Charity Chan.
  • AAMS Festival (Friday-Sunday in Valley Forge, PA)
The American Accordion Musicological Society (say that three times fast) is having its 20th annual Festival and Symposium with a full lineup of concerts and workshops, including performances by Tony Lovello, Vitaliy Pirog, and Lidia Kaminska.
  • Sturrfest 2007 (Friday in West Palm Beach, FL)

This Week in Accordion: Mardi Gras!

Lots of accordion happenings on the calendar this week — especially if you’re a fan of Cajun/zydeco music:

  • Mardi Gras (Tuesday in various locations)
Tomorrow is Mardi Gras (aka “Fat Tuesday”) and the zydeco bands are out in full force across the country. Buckwheat Zydeco, Rosie Ledet, and CJ Chenier are just a few of the folks playing tomorrow. Check our Cajun/zydeco events page for more.
  • Beale Street Zydeco Festival (Saturday/Sunday in Memphis, TN)
Didn’t get enough zydeco on Tuesday? This weekend, Beale Street turns into Bourbon Street as zydeco heavyweights like Keith Frank, Terrance Simien, and Roy Carrier invade Memphis.
  • Withrow Winter Wonderland Polka Dance (Sunday in Hugo, MN)
It’s never too cold to polka! This once-in-a-lifetime event features Eddie Blazonczyk’s Versatones and the long-awaited reunion of the Dobosenski Brothers and the Cavaliers. The Dobosenski Brothers and the Cavaliers were one of the hot Minnesota polka bands of the 70s and 80s and haven’t played together in 25 years!

I’ve also added some often-requested features to the calendar itself. You can now search for events in your area — just type in your city and state and we’ll show you what we have listed. Also, when you’re looking at an event listing, we’ll show you other upcoming events in the same area. Check it out.

Of course, if you don’t find any events in your area or, worse, you know about an event but don’t see it on our calendar… tell us about it!

This Week in Accordion: Main Squeeze

What’s happening in the accordion world this week?

  • Main Squeeze Accordion Orchestra (Wednesday in New York, NY)
What could be more romantic than spending Valentine’s Day with New York City’s only all-female, all-accordion orchestra? (Note: we cannot be held responsible if you’re swept off your feet by a winsome lass toting a Hohner.)
  • Mardi Gras Ball (Saturday in Cranston, RI)
Mardi Gras isn’t until next Tuesday, but why wait to start partying? This 15th Annual Cajun & Zydeco Mardi Gras Ball (located just outside Providence) features Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, and the Creole Cowboys.
  • 21 Accordion Salute to Merv Conn (Sunday in Silver Springs, MD)
Watch the Washington-area premiere of The Legend of Merv Conn, a documentary tribute to this local accordionist’s life and work. Then stay and participate in the 21-accordion salute honoring his 87th birthday. Save room for birthday cake! (Update: The Washington Post has an article on Merv’s big day.)

Check our calendar for more accordion happenings in your neighborhood. And, as always, let us know if we’re missing any events in your area.

Technical Difficulties Resolved… Polka On!

Our apologies to anyone who visited the site yesterday and was greeted by an unsightly “Fatal error” message. Long story short: our hosting company (for the second time in six months) suffered a server catastrophe which took down our site. Fortunately, we’ve learned the value of making backups, so everything should be back to normal now. Drop us a line if anything appears out of whack.

In the meantime, I’ll try to make up for lost time by posting a whole bunch of squeezebox-related goodies today. To start, here’s a clip of Anna playing accordion with the Corner Laughers during their excellent show at Brainwash last night (see photos).
